During the summer, the village transforms into a lively destination with small shops, restaurants, and cafes offering everything from fresh fish to local specialties.
The harbor is the heart of Byxelkrok, where you can enjoy boat life, buy freshly caught fish directly from the fishing boats, or take the ferry over to Blå Jungfrun – the legendary island in Kalmarsund. From here, several beautiful hiking trails also begin, including the popular Neptunirundan, which takes you through unique limestone landscapes and beautiful coastal meadows.
Byxelkrok offers something for everyone – whether you want to relax on the sunny cliffs by the sea, cycle along the scenic country roads, or visit attractions such as Byrums raukar and Trollskogen. The village also has a well-stocked grocery store, cozy farm shops, and opportunities for activities such as mini-golf, fishing, and boat trips.
Neptuni åkrar
Neptuni Åkrar is a fascinating and barren stone field located on the coast just north of Byxelkrok on Öland. The unique landscape consists of millions of round stones smoothed by the sea over centuries, creating an almost desert-like environment with dramatic beauty. The name comes from the Roman sea god Neptune and refers to the location's close connection to the sea.
During the summer, the fields bloom and are covered by the beautiful blue flax, an intensely blue flower that contrasts with the grey stones and creates a magical sight. The area is also home to a rich flora and fauna, with several rare plants and bird species thriving in the wind-swept coastal landscape.
Neptuni Åkrar is a popular spot for hiking and nature experiences, with several trails leading through the area along the coast. Visitors can enjoy the magnificent views of the sea, experience Öland's unique nature, and perhaps even spot a seal on the rocks.
This scenic location is a must-see for anyone visiting northern Öland – perfect for a peaceful walk, a picnic by the sea, or a sunset tour in one of the island's most iconic environments.
Sunsets
Northern Öland is known for its spectacular sunsets, where the sky fills with warm shades of red, orange, and purple as the sun slowly sinks below the horizon. With its open landscape and uninterrupted sea view, the island offers some of the most impressive evening scenes in Sweden.
One of the best places to experience the sunset is at Byxelkrok harbor, where you can sit on an outdoor terrace and watch the sun reflect in the water while the boats gently sway in the evening breeze. For those who prefer a more nature-based experience, the cliffs at Neptuni Åkrar are an unbeatable location – here, the sky and sea meet in a dramatic display of light and color.
During the summer months, the long, bright evenings create a magical atmosphere, and many visitors choose to end their day with a walk along the beach or a picnic by the water.
